The way we number out cattle is when they are calves we put a ear tag on them. When we go to fire brand the bulls we take out their tags. The fire brand consists of the last digit of the year they were born. The next  two numbers are their dams last two digits of her ear tag #. Some of the bulls numbers are ear tag numbers and some fire brands.
